Affiliations
In the vast majority of cases, when I recommend a Web site or a product, I have no connection of any sort with that site or product. There are a few exceptions. I am an affiliate with three companies: Amazon, Camden-Grey (a seller of essential oils), and Bench and Field (maker of an organic cat food). Though I strongly support these companies, with the exception of Amazon, I have chosen not to use the "affiliate" links, but to instead just link to those companies directly.
This choice is mostly because I just don't feel comfortable doing so and partly because I prefer to maintain my credibility when recommending products. No matter what, if someone is an affiliate and especially if they can potentially make money off it, a recommendation from them has less weight than a neutral third party.
Affiliate or not, over the years I have been extremely happy with the quality of Camden-Grey's products and services, so I am quite happy to recommend them whether I make any money or not. Ditto for Bench and Field—the best cat food I have yet tried. My cats thrive on it. I buy it directly from the manufacturer. Amazon.com, of course, is the leader in quality books offered at discount prices.
